You just came out from a brilliant performance of "Fiddler on the Roof". Which tune are you humming under your breath?
Matchmaker, Matchmaker

What do you think "Fiddler on the Roof" is about, anyway?
It's about a Jewish community in a Russian village.
It's a lovely romance about three sisters finding their true loves.
It's a story about religious conflict.
It's all about new ways taking over outmoded customs.
It's about old customs being challenged by upstarts.
It's about downtrodden, poverty-stricken peasants in pre-revolutionary Russia.
It's about hapless people who ignore what's going on around them and as a result get the carpet pulled out from under them.
It's a celebration of life, love and community, in the face of oppression.

It's 1900. You're the engineer running a train when some guy in one of them new-fangled automobiles shows up on the road beside the tracks, tooting his horn and evidently wanting a race. What do you do?
I'm already at full speed. I laugh and wave him on.
I find and maintain a speed such that I'm constantly just a little bit ahead of the guy, and thumb my nose at him.
I make a note of the model of his automobile so I can get one just like it for myself later.
I happily blow the whistle and order more coal in the furnace.
I smile, salute the guy, and start shovelling the coal myself.
I wave him on and then when he thinks he's won I overtake him.
I ignore him. If he wants to break his neck it's his own business.
I sniff disdainfully and speed up. I'll show him who's boss around here.

"Faith of our fathers! living still...."
(Loudly) "...in spite of Dungeon, Fire and Sword!"
(Gently) "O how our hearts beat high with joy..."
(Humming along)
"Faith of our fathers -- but it ain't my faith."
"Nor mine -- We will be true to thee till death!"

What do you like best about Lord of the Rings?
The drama and epic sweep of an incredible story.
The action of the battle between Good and Evil.
